"Kicking the bucket" - Cult of death on the farm
The phrase "kicking the bucket" is a paraphrase for the end of life. The expression comes from the Middle Ages, when everyone usually carried their own spoon on their belt. The spoon was a personal item that was only passed on to heirs after death.
Until well into the 20th century, it was customary to wipe the spoon on the tablecloth after a meal and keep it on the wall next to the table.
When leaving the farm, it was of course taken with you.
